Vishu festival is celebrated in Kerala in India generally on 14th April. As per traditional Malayalam calendar, Vishu occurs in the first month of Medan on the first day that is March or April. It is Kerala’s New Year.

“Vishukkani” is the most important event in Vishu which means seeing the first thing on the day after waking up brings prosperity. The auspicious articles such as betel leaves, metal mirror, raw rice, fresh lemon, golden cucumber, yellow flowers konna, arecanut, holy text and coins are arranged ritually a night before in a vessel of bell metal known as uruli and are placed in the worship room of the house. Nilavilakku means a bell metal lamp is also placed besides it. On this day people go to the worship room with eyes closed and open the eyes there, then read verses from Ramayana and visit temples.
