WHY IN THE MIDDLE OF WATER? ![]() HARMANDIR SAHIB in Amritsar has been built right in the middle of a water pool. Why? The answer is simple to those who are capable of intuition i.e. for the GIANIS. GIANI OH JO AAP VICHARAE. The word Sikh stands for a student and in this case not of the "letters" of the Holy Books as you normally find them in the universities and colleges but of "spirit" called "SURTI" i.e. a student seeking spiritual knowledge. Thus, for a Sikh to learn, he must be humble and should always ponder over what he listens. Then what comes out of his mouth should make sense, TATT, and the person should not be talking non-sense, JHHAKH. Thus, a Sikh should be a person of spirit or a SURTI WALA but when a person is angry or hot tempered, KARODHI, then he has no SURTI. Normally, a simpleton or MOORAKH will display anger through shouting loudly to impress upon others whilst a sensible person will always exercise calm and cool-headedness in giving answers or during making speeches. Now, the real Harmandir is one's physical body from where you know God through expositions. HARMANDIR OH JITHHON HAR JAATA But what qualities such a person should possess are implied in the model at Amritsar. That is, the person should be as cool-headed and composed as sitting in a tank of cold water. And further water is also used to clean your body of "sins" as SURTI is for the cleaning of one's heart. That is why the Pandits or Brahmins would tell their people to go and bathe in Ganga or other holy rivers for the remission of "sins". John, the Baptist was an ideal Brahmin of Middle East who also baptised people in water for the remission of sins. So, the water of the pool reminds people to be morally sound and to remain cool-headed persons of SURTI if they would like to understand SURTI UPDESH, THE GUR BAANI of SATGURUS. Also, couple of simple examples will further clear the sense. Two persons fighting with each other are separated and then they are asked to take a glass of cool water to cool down their anger, relax and settle down the matter amicably in peace i.e. SEHAJ NAAL NEBARR LOVO. Another example is that people working hard in the fields especially in the hot weather get out of their minds, BONDAL JANDAE, through the heat of the day but they feel much relaxed after taking a bath under the tube-well and sitting in the cold water tank. So, they exclaim, "Ah, now I feel in good spirit, SURTI AAIEE". Thus, BAANI is a SURTI UPDESH for the people of spirit, who have overpowered anger or HAUMAE but for those people, who display HAUMAE, it is said, "SOCHIAN SOCH NAA HOWIAE; JAE SOCHAE LAKH WAAR". Whilst some people of SURTI try to become over clever or CHATTAR and start to render praises to themselves or others like a salesman; for them it is said,"CHOPIAN CHOP NAA HOWIAE; JAE LEH RAHA LIVTAAR" - GHUMIARI APNAA HI BHANDA SULAHNDI AE. Such clever people mostly MUNNMUKHS also lack SEHAJ and, therefore, they cannot grasp the meanings of GURBAANI. Whereas the people of cool and composed temperament have SEHAJ and, therefore, they grasp the meanings of GURBAANI and they have the desire to learn more. About such people, it is said, "BHUKHIAN BHUKH NAA UTTRAE; JAE BANHAN PURIAN BHAAR". People of CHIT BIRTI or of the Holy Spirit are not led by their own wisdom but they are rather the Spokesmen of God; it is said, "SEH SAINPAN LAKH HOWN; TAN IK NAA CHALAE NAAL".
