Babus to be protected from netas

NEW DELHI: The end of the transfer-posting raj is in sight. Bureaucrats are set to get new deal from the new government with the Centre readying a
legislation that will not only assure babus of fixed-tenure postings but also protect them from political interference in their day-to-day functioning.

Besides, all bureaucratic appointments, transfers and postings will be subject to parliamentary scrutiny. As a consequence, the IAS and IPS officers in the country will no longer be at the mercy of the whimsical transfer and posting regime that operates currently.

However, along with these comforts will come added responsibility. The government plans to bring in a new public service code that will lay down a strict performance evaluation regime for promotions and postings of babus.... more

Chinese passing off fake drugs as ‘Made in India’

NEW DELHI: Are fake drugs manufactured in China being pushed into various African countries with the `Made in India' tag? The Indian government has
long suspected this to be the case, but it now has definite evidence for the first time.

Last week, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) of Nigeria issued a press release stating that a large consignment of fake anti-malarial generic pharmaceuticals labelled `Made in India' were, in fact, found to have been produced in China.

New Delhi has registered ``strong protest'' with the Chinese mission and China's foreign trade ministry, according to sources in the commerce ministry.

India's High Commissioner in the Nigerian capital of Abuja, Mahesh Sachdev, had earlier written to then commerce secretary GSK Pillai, alerting him to the large seizure: ``While this is a case of a Chinese company exporting fake `Made in India' labelled medicines which has been accidentally exposed, it is unlikely to be an isolated incident. Indeed there is no reason for Nigeria to be the only country to be receiving such consignments.''

Record rush for Tamil Nadu govt medical seats

CHENNAI: In a record of sorts for a government-run medical university, the directorate of medical education has sold more than 14,000 application
forms for seats in medical and dental colleges affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University in five days. This is much more than what the colleges sold for the entire admission period last year.

The rush for admission in government medical colleges follow the seat-for-cash scam in private-run MBBS courses exposed by TOI earlier this month.

On Day One, 6,000 applications were sold across the counter at 15 government colleges in the state. Last year, the colleges sold only 3,500 applications on the first day and 9,000 at the end of the fifth day. "In all we sold only 12,732 applications last year. This year, we have already sold more than 14,000. We have 4,000 more and have ordered 5,000 more. They will be available till June 17,'' said selection committee secretary Sheela Grace. ...more
