A year of big losses, 2008 has been the most unfortunate for the Tata Group. The terror attacks at the Taj Mahal Hotel, at the peak of the earnings season, have only made things worse.

"We will rebuild every inch that has been damaged in this attack and bring back the Taj to its full glory," R K Krishna Kumar, vice chairman of Indian Hotels, said in a statement. Brave words, but the restoration -- both physical and monetary -- will take time.

"We cannot replace the lives that have been lost and we will never forget the terrifying events of last night, but we must stand together, shoulder to shoulder as citizens of India, and rebuild what has been destroyed," Ratan Tata, chairman, Tata Group, said after the attacks.

Indian Hotels (IHCL) -- the Tata company that owns the Taj hotels -- had reported a turnover of Rs 367.82 crore (Rs 3.67 billion) for the quarter ended September 30, 2008. The turnover for the half year ended September 30, 2008 was at Rs 744.73 crore (Rs 7.44 bilion), a growth of 9 per cent over the turnover reported for the corresponding period of the preceding year.
