We knew that Mahindra had plans to launch a range of motorcycles in India – and it looks like the launch is getting closer!
The company recently released a teaser video for its upcoming motorcycle(s) which has kindled much excitement among Indian bike lovers. What rumors say is that there are two motorcycles being readied for launch: First, a 300 cc one and then a 125 cc one.
Here is what we can infer from the video. The race track is in Rome, Italy. There are a few boysand a girl watching the race track. There are Mahindra team members who are monitoring the performance of the motorcycle. Suddenly, from around a corner, the motorcycle appears and the racer zooms past the spectators. The team members are excited and celebrate their victory by applauding and giving each other high-fives.
What we know so far
Mahindra 300 cc and 125 cc bikes soon
300 cc bike will be manufactured in India, so would have a very tasty price
Launch in 3 weeks’ time
The teaser video then displays the text ‘Tested in Italy Coming toIndia’ and a ‘ Mahindra 2 Wheelers’ logo.
We know that Mahindra* is developing its two wheelers with its 2008 acquisiton ‘Engine Engineering’, a motorcycle design company in Italy. The teaser video seems to feature the upcoming Mahindra 300 cc bike.
The 300 cc motorcycle has been reported to have taken several test rides in Italy’s Motor GP track at Vallelunga. Engine Engineering is famous for its attractive as well as purposeful bike designs. Besides Mahindra, this firm has already been designing motorcycles for Malaguti, an Italian scooter maker, Yamaha, TVS, Loncin, Gilera, Domino* and Benelli.
The teaser video reveals minimal information about the upcoming motorcycle. We can see that 300 cc motorcycle has dual headlamps, leaf-shaped rear viewmirrors, handlebar weights, metallic gold-colored inverted front forks and a liquid cooled engine. Designwise, this bike looks like a track-racing motorcycle and could take on the Kawasaki Ninja 250R in India.
As far as technical specifications of the Mahindra 300 cc motorcycle goes, there is no official information. It is believed that its engine may have a peak power of 22 bhp or more. Another rumor doing the rounds is that it would be named ‘Diablo’.
CNBC report on Mahindra motorcycles
CNBC TV channel has confirmed the news, stating that Mahindra isabout to launch a 300 cc motorcycle along with a 125 cc commuter motorcycle in our country. Chances are then high indeed that the teaser video shows the 300 cc motorcycle. TheMahindra 125 cc motorcycle is expected to be priced starting at Rs. 46,000, ex-showroom, Pune. The TV channel also reported thatMahindra’s two wheelers will be launched in two-three weeks. Thismeans we would see the launch towards the end of September or early October 2010.
Will the Sym Cevalo be the 125 cc motorcycle from Mahindra?
Expectations are high about the 125 cc motorcycle because it is going to enter a highly competitive market in India. We have to wait and see what special features and pricing Mahindra offers to capture the market. Speculations based on Mahindra’sassociation with Sym are that Mahindra may bring in the Cevalo125 from the Sym stable. The Cevalo 125 is powered by an air-cooled, four stroke engine that produces an amazing 15 hp.
The bike design looks similar to Yamaha FZ. Cevalo fatures a digital speedometer, LED tail lamps, split seats, monoshocks, disc brakes, sporty riding position, naked chain sprocket,* fat tyres and large-sized muffler. But, in order to keep the price in check, Mahindra may shed a few features.
Expected upcoming motorcycles based on Mahindra’s Delhi Auto Expo concept bikes
We all knew that Mahindra showcased some of its stunning motorcycles in the Delhi Auto Expo, earlier this year. Mahindra’s two wheeler stall in the Auto Expo had a racing type motorcycle which bore a 124 cc engine producing 53 bhp of maximum power and 32 Nm of maximum torque! This motorcycleis specifically developed for racing and probably showcased just to show the company’s prowess in developing motorcycles for racing.
The specific output was 424 hp per litre and the maximum speed of this motorcycle was 245 kmph. The front and rear brakes were brembo mono discs. The bike was shod with 17 inch wheels. The fuel tank capacity is 13.5 litres and the bike’s size, as per the catalogue displayed is 1850 mm in overall length, 1050 mm in overall height, 730 mm saddle height, 495 mm overall width and 1245 mm wheel base. This bike is actually the ‘Engine Engineering’ designed MotoGP 125 cc race motorcycle which has been very successful in the 125 cc segment of Moto GP.
Summing up, we have two surprising bike launches in about 2-3 weeks time. One will be the 300 cc motorcycle and the second bike would be a 125 cc motorcycle, derived either from Sym’s stable or from ‘Engine Engineering’s new age motorcycles. What we know for certain is that since Mahindra has stated that it would be manufacturing the motorcycles atits Pithampur factory, the premium sports bike (300 cc motorcycle) will enjoy tax benefits and may be priced very competitively, making a few niche bikes, run for their money.
