1. Baba Farid was born in 1189 A.D.(according to some references 1173 A.D.) in Khotwal 'kasba' (I think this town has a different name now. Can someone help with its new name?) near Multan. He was a dedicated muslmaan and lived all his life in a faqeerana way of life. Baba Farid was well versed in Punjabi and Pharsi(Persian). Most of his poetry which is in the form of shaloks is respectfully secured in Guru Granth sahib by fifth Sikh Guru during its compilation. Baba Farid lived in Montogomery(Pak-Pattan) and Multan most of his life and written both in Persian and Punjabi. He died in 1266 A.D. There is a Mazaar in his name in Pak-Pattan near Montgomery and his Urs is celebrated every year on his mazaar. Also one of the districts in East Punjab is named after him...Faridkot. There is a Medical University being built in Faridkot that bears the name of beloved Baba Farid of all Punjabis.
Baba Farid's shaloks are probably most famous in Punjab and easily memorable. Here are some as a sample:
Farida roti meri katth ki laavan meri bhukh.
jihnaN khadiaN chopRhiaN ghaney sehn ge dukh.
kagaN karang dhandholiya sagla khaya maas.
eh doi nainaN matt chhouo pirH dekhan ki aas.

dekh prai chopRhi matt tarsaye jiOu.
2. Baba Farid died in the middle of 13th century and there is no written poetry available for next over 200 years in Punjabi. Second available poetry is by another Punjabi baba, Baba Nanak. Baba Nanak, Guru Nanak Dev to Sikhs was born in 1470s and have written extensively in Punjabi and a mixture of Hindvi (not Hindi), another popular spoken language of the time. He is also the founder of third religion of Punjab called Sikhism. Although, he is percieved as a Sikh prophet now, he was popular and revered amongst all Hindus and Muslims. It is popular about his death that Hindus wanted to creamate him and Muslims wanted to burry him in kabar. He was born in a small town in SheikhuPura Dist now called Nankana Sahib. Most of his poetry is present in Guru Granth sahib too. Here are one of his verses that touch me most:
bhariyee hath pair tan deh, paani dhotey utteras kheh.
moot paleeti kapaRh hoi, de sabun laiyea oh dhoi.
bhariyea mat paapaN ke sang, oh dhopey naave ke rung.
*kheh = dirt, maell
*mat = mind
*naave ke rung = by reciting God's name.
Other Sikh Gurus who wrote poetry in Punjabi were second(Guru Angad Dev), third(Guru Amar Das), fourth(Guru Ramdas), fifth(Guru Arjun Dev), Sixth(Guru HarGobind), ninth(Guru Teg Bahadur) and tenth guru (Guru Gobind Singh).
Guru Gobind Singh has written in Persian, Sanskrit and Punjabi. Here is one of his verses written after he lost all his family and friends in battle and was wandering alone in jungles:
mitter piyare nooN haal mureedaN da kehna.
sool surahi khanjar piyala bing kasaiyaN da sehna.
yaarhRe da saanu sathher changa bhath kheReyaN da rehna.
*sathher = soolan di saij
*kheReyaN = Ranjha's home town.
There were few other Sikh theologists who wrote lot of religious poetry in Punjabi during and after the times of Sikh Gurus. Prominent amongst them are, Bhai Gurdas ji, Bhai Gurdas ji II, Rattan Singh Banghoo etc.
3. Next most famous Punjabi poet during that time is Shah Hussain also known as Madho Lal Hussain. He was born in 1538 A.D. in Lahore. He lived most of his life in and around Lahore. ChiraagaN wala mela in Lahore in Shaalimar bagh and near his makbara(Madho Lal's Makbara) is celebrated in his memory every year by Lahoris. It is believed that he was a 'pahunchiya hoya' faqeer and there are many stories about his 'karamaats'.
He is one of my most favourite Punjabi poets. Here are some samples, very ThaiTh Lahori Punjabi:
sajjan bin raataN hoyeaN vaddiaN,
maas jhaRhey jhaRh pinjar hoya, kan kan hoyeaN haddiaN,

4. Lala DamodarDas, is another popular Punjabi poet. His popularity stems mostly from the fact that he was the first prominent Punjabi poet to pen up the now famous story of Heer-Ranjha. In fact in his Heer-ranjha kissa, he admitts that he is a eye witness of Heer-Ranjha epic. He wrote in a mixutere of pothohaari, Lahori and Lehdi Punjabi accents. He was a contemprary of Akbar. Here is a sample from his Heer:
na koi aakkey Heerey mainu na kahou koi saleti,

5. Again, here is another one who had it first. It was story fo Mirza-Sahiba and writer poet is Peelu. Peelu was a Mussalman Jatt and believed to be from Majha(belt between Ravi and Beas) region of Punjab. He is contemporary of Fifth Sikh Guru Arjun and mughal badshah JahaNgir and wrote Mirza's story in a very painfull and very descriptive words. Even today, Peelu's Mirza is probably the most famous Mirza around and every Punjabi young boy, who thinks himself of as Mirza (others think of themselvs as Ranjha, I will describe the difference in both role models laterJ), remembers atleast one or two verses from Peelu's Mirza. Most probably the following one:
ChaRde Mizrze khan nooN jatt Vanjhal dainda matt………OOOOOO
Bhatth ranna di dosti…….OOOOOOO
OR
Manda keeta E SahibaN mera tarkash tangiya jand,
Tin sau kaani Mirze jawan di dainda SiyalaN nooN vand……OOOOOOOO
Here are some more verses from Peelu's Mirza-Sahiba:
ghar Kheeve de SahibaN jammi Manglvaar,
doom sohile gaoNde Khan Kheeve de bar,
-------
ghar Bijjal de jammiyaN vich karaRhe bar,
janam ditta mai baap ne roop ditta kartaar,

-------

-------

Katak bhiRha diyaN takriN maithoN ratth darey,
Val val vadd diyaN soormeyN jioN kheti pain gaRhey,
Sir SiyalaN de vadd ke sittuNga vich raRhey……..
And at the end of Mirza-SahibaN story, he writes following lines in a very philosophical way refering to this mortal life:
Peelu puchhey Shaer nooN kitt val giya jahaan,
Lag lag gaiyeaN mazlasaN beh beh gai dewaan,
Eh kissa Peelu Shaer da jehnu jaaney kul jahaan….
6. Next very well known and good Punjabi poet is Hazrat Sultan Bahu. He was born in Sher Kot near Multan and revered by Muslims as born Wali.
One of my favourite verse from his poetry is:
che chaRh channa kar rushnai, zikker karende taarey hoo,
shala na koi musafir theeve te kakh jehna de bhaarey hoo,

He wrote most of his writings in Persian and only one dewaan in Punjabi
7. Hazrat Bulley Shah is probably the most famous Punjabi Sufi and poet amongst all. He wrote lot of kaafis and dohReys. He was born in village Pandok near Lahore (I think it is close to Kasoor) in 1680 A.D. and lived most his life in Kasoor and Lahore area. He adopted Hazrat Anayat Shah Kadri of Lahore as his murshid and praised and loved him all his life. There is lot of matter on Hazrat Bulley Shah's life that can fill hundreds pages if I started writing. I have about 3 whole books in Punjabi available on Bulley Shah's life and poetry. He lived his life as a true sufi. Those were the bad times and Bulley Shah have metioned it many times in his poems.
here are some samples. I can post more if anyone likes them:

8. The Punjabi poet who made the story of Heer Ranjha immortal forever and gave it new mystic and spirtual touch was Baba Waris Shah. He was born in Jandiala Sher Khan near Seikhupura. In fact Bullah and Waris were contemporary and also of the age and went to the same school in Kasur and had the same teacher as their murshid. But both had a little different view of things. Bullah was a pure sufi and a emotional poet expressing his own love emotions in his kalaam, Waris appears as playing the role of a more 'danishmand' 'bazurahg'.
Many of his poetic lines have become an integral part of Punjabi folk culture.like:
Waris shah na aadtaN jandiyaN ne bhanveiN kattiyee poriaN poriaN ji.....
Waris Shah chhupaiyee khalak koloN bhanveiN apna hi guRh khaiyeye ji....
Waris Shah na dabbiyee motiaN nooN, phull agg de vich na saaRhiyee ni....
Waris Shah na betiaN jihna jaiyeaN, ohh ki jaandey kadder jwaiyeaN di.....
Waris Shah mehboob nooN taddoN paiyee, jadoN aapna aap gwai laiyee....
Waris lived and studied from his murshid at Kasur for a long time and he loved the town of Kasur more than any other place. During his times Punjab was a battle field al the time and he writes at one place:
saarey mulakh Punjab kharaab vichoN,
mainu baRha afsouss kasur da aye.....
It won't be wrong to say that 'who have not read WareShah's Heer have not read Punjabi literature yet'. Every time I read it it brings new depths and meanings to words. Singing Waris Shah's Heer is a eternal experience. Here are some verses:
