Sher - e - Punjab
Maharaja Ranjit Singhji
(Barsi: 29 June, 2001)
(1780 - 1839)
Maharaja Ranjit Singh (13th November 1780 - 29 June, 1839) also called "Sher-e-Punjab" ("The Lion of Punjab") was the principle Sikh ruler of the sovereign country of Punjab and the Sikh Empire. His sons were, in rapid succession, the others rulers but their rule was short lived. The Maharaja was born on 13th November 1780 in Gujranwala now in modern day Pakistan, into the Sansi-Sandhawalia family. At the time, much of Punjab was ruled by the Sikhs, who had divided the territory among factions known as misls.

Ranjit Singh's father Maha Singh was the misaldar ("commander", "misl leader") of the Sukerchakia misl and controlled a territory in west Punjab based around his headquarters at Gujranwala. Ranjit Singh succeeded his father as the misaldar, at the young age of 12. The name of his mother was Mai Raj Kaur. Mai Raj Kaur was the daughter of the king of Jind. She was also known by the name of ‘Malwain’.

A fearless warrior

This picture is said to be that of Maharaja Ranjit Singh with Lord William Bentick and S.Hari Singh Nalua standing at back on his left. However this claim now appears to be untrue

Raaj meh raaj:
He was brave, right from his childhood.
At the young age of 11, he won his first battle.
He united all Sikh warriors under a single banner.
At the age of 21, he was crowned as the first Maharaja of Punjab.
He built a large army to protect his kingdom.
Even the British choose to stay away from Punjab during his time.

Jog meh jogi:
He considered Guru Nanak as the True King, and himself as a sevak.
He never sat on the throne and did not wear a crown.
Though he was a king, he was always humble.
He readily accepted punishment for his mistakes.
He renovated the Golden temple and other historic Gurudwaras.
Coins started by him had Guru Nanak's name on them, but did not have any mention of his name.
To know the true situation of his people, he disguised himself and used to walk in his kingdom at night.

Always remember :
A true Sikh
Is a combination of
Sainthood and Royalty,
Like, Maharaja Ranjit Singhji.
